We raise our sheep and harvest products on a 100-year-old former dairy farm pasture and woodlot. Located in Northwestern Ontario, just west of Thunder Bay, we took over the farm in 2019 to make more space for our flock.
Using regenerative farming practices, we use all natural inputs as much as possible to rebuild the soil health, maintain wildlife habitat, and protect the wetland and creeks that flow through the property.
All of the animals live with as much freedom and fresh air as we can give them, while also providing for their protection and safety.
Our main product is our lovely flock of sheep. They provide wool, meat, and the fertilizer to continue to regenerate the soil.
Our Icelandic and Shetland sheep don't require any grain - they stay healthy and happy on a diet of mixed pasture in the summer, hay in the winter, and some supplemental alfalfa treats around lambing time.
Lambs are kept with their moms until naturally weaned, unless they need to be bottle fed for health reasons.
"Icelandic Lamb" is now a protected appellation (similar to Champagne) that can only apply to Icelandic lambs raised and harvested in Iceland. But rest assured, our lamb is similar in its delicate flavour and tender texture.
Many folks who say they don't generally like lamb are happy with ours!
Meat from lambs that consume only grass and no grain has been shown to have more healthy Omega-3 fats, Vitamins A&E, and lower saturated fats.
Our flock only receives antibiotics or other medications under veterinary supervision if needed for their health. And we follow strict provincial guidance that no animal goes for meat if they still have any medication in their system.
Whether it's wild apples, saskatoon berries, chokecherries, foraged mushrooms, or birch syrup - our products are harvested with the environment in mind.
Apple trees and berry bushes are maintained with natural fertilizers and gentle care to maintain their health.
Mushrooms are taken with minimal impact to their habitat and nothing is added to encourage growth that wouldn't already be in the forest.
Trees are tapped only when they are a sufficient size to prevent negative impact, and taps are pulled a little early, with natural care for the bore hole to help the tree heal.
